Ufa, July 9, 2015. — Nikolay Nikiforov, Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, took part in the extended session of BRICS leaders (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) on the VII summit of BRICS and SCO. It was organized under the chairmanship of Russia from 8 to 10 July in Ufa. Members of the meeting noted growing importance of infocommunication technologies (ICT). Collaboration directions of BRICS-countries in ICT sphere were outlined during working visits of Nikolay Nikiforov to Brazil, India, China and South Africa, which took place in spring-summer 2015. ICT ministers of BRICS are going to meet in October, 2015.
Collaboration of BRICS in ICT sphere (mutual development and promotion of microelectronics and critically important software types) was discussed during official visits of Nikolay Nikiforov to the Republic of India on March 25, 2015, to the People’s Republic of China on March 27, 2015 and to the Federative Republic of Brazil from 17 to 18 April, 2015.
ICT ministers of BRICS are starting to prepare to the next meeting, which will take place in Moscow in October, 2015. The meeting will be aimed at development of collaboration directions in ICT sphere. Nikolay Nikiforov is standing for active development of international collaboration in this sphere. “High level of penetration of infocommunication technologies in all spheres of our lives creates not only new possibilities, but also new threats. I think that BRICS and SCO should discuss demonpolisation of global software market. Today the majority of countries are using software products produced by one country and few companies. Such monopolies generate new threats,” said Nikolay Nikiforov on the VII International IT Forum with participation of BRICS and SCO.
The Minister noted that the country shouldn’t focus only on internal technological development: “IT projects should be international in order to be successful.”
The VII summit of BRICS and SCO took place from 8 to 10 July, 2015 in Ufa. The summit was organized under the slogan “BRICS partnership: a powerful factor of global development”.
Leaders of BRICS-countries adopted Ufa declaration, the final document of the summit. The document evaluates current global political and economic situation and general approaches of BRICS to the most important topics of multilateral collaboration. The BRICS strategy for economic partnership till 202 was also adopted on the session. It is aimed at strengthening of multilateral collaboration for speeding up socio-economic development and increasing competitiveness of BRICS-countries in global economy.
